about

He's back after 3 years. A new album from the mighty Dub Chieftain

“The Wickerman meets the Wombles”

The Dub Chieftain is a reclusive figure living in an undisclosed location on the banks of the river Clyde, working out of the Dub Grotto.

He uses homemade instruments, bric-a-brac and ingenuity to create bizarre audio-nuggets of increasing profundity. Since his last release - Peninsula Sessions (2016) he has been indulging his interests in vintage keyboards, folklore, metal detecting, musical archaeology and the early medieval Kingdom of Strathclyde.

His new album, Puppo Shadets features instruments as diverse as a Carnyx, a form of ancient battle horn recreated using a traffic cone and copper piping, a homemade bamboo chanter, a snare drum bought at a car boot sale for 2 pounds and a Casiotone MT-41.

Here he is in his own words:

“Puppo Shadets was originally intended as a soundtrack for a feature length animated film. A local anarchist collective sent me a script - an allegorical tale combining puppets, ecological themes and the occult - imagine the Wickerman meets the Wombles.

Anyway, this organisation had secured public funding for the project and had managed to film about 5 minutes of footage. The council got wind something non-standard was going down though and sent some inspectors round. Production was closed down immediately on the basis of some jumped up Health & Safety concern.

After a full investigation, the collective was convicted in absentia of misusing public monies. This all went down when I was holed up in the Grotto working on the music. I’m happy with how some of the music turned out but was gutted when the funding got pulled as I have a wife, 3 kids and a cat to support."

and from 7"s Blogspot

Dub Chieftain from Glasgow Scotland (of course!) is one of those genius/maniacs who is making sounds the only way he knows how.....with whatever is on hand at the time. A crazy unique mess that by design isn't going to remotely sound like anything else.
