The Bordellos

Starcrossed Radio

Not a new album (for once! This band is nothing if not prolific), but an eleven song sampler designed to lure the unwary and world-weary into the ever-shifting, forever-enthralling world of The Bordellos.

Defiantly lo-fi though they are, The Bordellos also boast one of the smartest songwriters we have going for us right now, frontman Brian Bordello, and no matter what kind of clatter the band lays down behind him, be it the menacing fuzz of “Attack of the Killer B-Sides,” or the electronic spatter of “Free New Music Day,” it’s Bordello’s lyrics that seizes the imagination.

Sometimes splenetic, sometimes cunning, often cynical, he’s been compared to a maddened Mark E Smith and that’s fair enough. But he has his idols like the rest of us, and “Life, Love and Billy Fury” is a heartfelt paean to one of British rock’s most significant founding fathers, while the so-called “Velvets version” of “Vicious Circle” does indeed echo Lou-and-Co. (third album era)… with added harmonica. Ha, you didn’t expect that, did you?

Temperamentally, Starcrossed Radio is all over the place — “Persian Princess” is so quiet as to be almost inaudible; “Never Learn” is a sepulchral love song, all creepy organ and is that a creaking door in the background? “Sunk and Screwed” is startled insects dancing on the skinniest string on the guitar; “Disco Pants” has percussives choruses sandwiched between spot-on harmonies and the insects now have a keyboard to play with. And then there’s “The Kind of Girl,” which sounds like a garage band rehearsing on an old cassette tape, and is all the more contagious because of it.

So that’s Starcrossed Radio — not the best of The Bordellos, because you need more than 11 tracks for that, and neither “I May Be Reborn” (Brian B’s favorite track) or “Southport” (bandmate Dan’s) is included. But that just gives you something else to look forward to finding. Their Bandcamp page has around sixty albums and EPs for the uninitiated to explore. So be good to yourself and do so.
