Portland trio Honey Bucket formed in 2012, citing influences such as The Clean, Television Personalities, and The Fall. If you dig those artists you’ll surely be into Honey Bucket’s charmingly shambolic sound. Having been championed by neighbors The Woolen Men, they’ve released a cassette, 7″ and a few digital EPs to date and are set to drop their proper debut album, Magical World, via See My Friends on September 23. (Preorder.)

Say the band:
Magical World is the result of Honey Bucket’s six to eight month encounter with various multi-track cassette thingies. Of the 13 songs included on Magical World, Devo Hat is among those most content to indulge in pure pop song chord-ery. Lyrics contain real-life references to family photos, Yayoi Kusama, and billy’s arm.

It’s hard to ignore the brilliance of a simplistic (and kick-ass) punk song. Portland, OR’s indie rock scene is doing a fantastic job of giving us just that; and in the case of Honey Bucket, it’s coming at us in a sardonically playful, utterly catchy package. … magical results: 8 tracks of three-chord garage-punk masterpieces, each one wackier than the last. 

If the basic catchiness of Honey Bucket’s musical abilities reels you in, their off-beat sense of humor keeps you hooked…. clever storytelling coupled with its raging simplicity is certainly setting the stage for Honey Bucket’s sound to blow up the circuit.

JM: Oh yeah, they’re cool.


RM: Yeah, they’re fun. Just like a really stripped down 3-piece band.


IH: They have a song about the day when all of The Beatles are dead—like when all of The Beatles are finally dead. It’s a really good song.


RM: Yeah, the songs are just like really happy. They kind of have these sad introspective moments, and the drumming is just kind of jazzy.


IH: They’ve got a certain edge to them.
