about

THE PORTLAND MERCURY

The Woolen Men, the Portland trio that's been quietly racking up an impressive catalog over the years, via cassette, vinyl, and otherwise. The Woolen Men have an album titled Dog Years coming out which culls some of the finest moments from those cassettes and out-of-print EPs. "Two Brothers" is a first taste.. sounds terrific. Here's looking forward to the full-length comp, coming this fall.

When we last heard from Portland’s The Woolen Men on Lo-Pie, they were playing some low key guitar pop on the glitter-encrusted Hair Of The Dog tape. This outing is much more post-punk in vibe, with the bass leading the songs à la the Fall and even some of the vocals recalling those now-ubiquitous Joy Divison demos. The band keeps it real with an ultra-live sound and, as on Hair of the Dog, they reveal a serious gift for perfect pop hooks,

Like the rest of the Woodsist catalog, the Woolen Men’s self-titled record is influenced in equal parts by sunny ’60s psychedelic-pop and noisy ’80s post-punk. The songs are driven by Lawton Browning’s jangly guitar, Spielman’s minimalistic drumming and Alex Geddes’ punky, warm bass parts. They take turns singing. Their vocals are crooner-esque, but gritty, flawed and ultra-catchy.

Their LP with Woodsist was made just like their Dog Years compilation, only more quickly. They recorded upwards of 25 songs over the course of four separate recording sessions for the album, but only put 10 songs on the actual album.
