REVIEW

Metal Postcard Records ‘New No York’ Compilation Featuring Neon Kittens, Salem Trials, Lucy & The Drill Holes, and clickBaiters

Sydney's independent record label shares lo-fi, post punk, and alternative acts.

New No York reads as a underground burned CD that you pass to your closest friends. It bears individuality by each respective band, but together form a projection where post-punk and darkwave will lead.

GIRL UNDERGROUND MUSIC

NEON KITTENS are the new cats on the block, with their name taken from a missheard 'Ultravox!' lyric and songs that are inspired by their collective love of No Wave, PiL, On-U Sound and ZE Records.

Their debut single 'Drag My Nails' b/w 'You'll Say No' (on their own label) was shiftly followed by their Metal Postcard debut; 'House of The Devil' EP.

The band have had a busy summer, doing mixes for Salem Trials; working on their own second EP, single and debut album... whilst still finding time to work on Russ Spence's first solo EP.

Their 4 songs featured on this album were recorded during sessions for a 3rd EP and second album and, again, are unique to the 'NEW NO YORK' album.

SALEM TRIALS are the band out of time and place. Originally formed in 1987, in the cold Wellington St, Allerton Basement. Very prolific, recorded several EP's and cassette singles plus 4 or 5 albums before calling it a day in, 1990.

Fast forward to 2018 and they were back to finish what they started. The first year saw tiny baby steps, but by the summer of 2022 they had released 25 albums and quite a few singles!

Currently on a break since completing their triple album,'Postcards From The Other Side of The Sun'- but rather than take a break, they just went back to writing and recording. Currently working on several albums, because they don't do anything by halves!

The 4 featured songs by them were recording during the Summer and are exclusive to this compilation.

LUCY & THE DRILL HOLES - with a name like that you would be forgiven for expecting an industrial onslaught... but you might be surprised to find that they actually have a much softer, fuzzy dreamworld sound. Lucy is an occasional backing singer for the Salem Trials and she fancied doing something musically different with Andy & Boss whilst Russ was on holiday.

A single, 'Not My War' was released on Metal Postcard but nothing else has been heard from this trio until now.

Their 4 songs were recorded during the Summer for a planned album that now appears to have been shelved, when Lucy started to have doubts about her vocal abilities and Andy started spending more time with the Kittens.

So, sadly, looks like this might be the last you hear from Lucy (except for the odd Salem Trials vocal).

clickBAITERS - Where do you start with this bunch of misfits? Not much is known about this quartet other than Lucy's sister plays bass for them and the looker of the band, Hope Munro, plays a beat on anything and everything she finds! This is rounded off with the ferocious twin guitar attack of Jared and Olivia. Vocals come from Jared (sounding suspiciously like Andy Goz, it has to be said), plus additional vocals from Alli and Hope!

They have recorded quite a lot of unreleased demos (I am, reliably, told) but so far, their only release to date is the split 'SNAKE' EP with Occult Character (also available on Metal Postcard).

Their 4 songs come alive like Zappa, CAN, and Faust whilst sharing a small room with Raw Power Stooges! All their songs are 'unique' to this album but they tell me a longer version of 'J'ai Raison...' could quite possibly see the light of day on a future release! God help us!? '1:14' already felt like a lifetime!

Sleeve notes by
Bob Roberts, November 2022.

Neon Kittens would like to thank everybody personally, but they are too busy licking their own paws right now!

Salem Trials would like to thank Monolith Cocktail, Bob Osbourne and Simon Edwards for their wonderful support and kind words.

Lucy would like to thank Andy for ditching her for those young kittens, the bastard! Seriously, she's glad she got to try her hand at fronting a band and she would like to thank everyone that played and/or had kind words for her debut single, 'Not My War'.

clickBAITERS would like to thank Brian Shea and Matt Griffin for their wonderful way with words and for allowing them to be brutally slayed by the band.
