about

The Chives debut album on Metal Postcard is here

It's dead noisy, it's brilliant, dare i say it......it is the future of rock'n'roll as well as its present and past and it's coming on the express train from Boston.

They have something in common with the new generation of bands coming out of Sydney & Melbourne

But there's that east coast edge that at one moment reminds me of Sunburned Hand of Man and offshoot Tobacco and those now unknown bands that would play the last remaining dives of Williamsburg (2008-2012) while at the same time pulling on the classic lines of the Lovers, Velvets and even the Strokes.

The Chives Say .......

Out of the trailer park and into the smoking remains of a midtown deli, barking like a mad dog smoking menthols, The Chives are defined by how much they suck and not much else. Generations of horrible fathers bang their heads in approval of their children's fruitless efforts. They claim to have smoked so many spliffs that medical doctors believe marijuana can no longer effect them, but the layman would just assume they were wrecked all the time. So spread them on your bagel, then spread your legs, because one thing is for sure: The Chives are here to fuck."

REVIEWS

Built on blistering leads and youthful aggression, the record is like a bubblegum pop effort left out in the sun to fry, each song resting on jangly melodies buried in a wide array of fuzz. The Chives is a record you can have some fun with, play it as loud as possible, and feel each wildly pummeled groove and primal riff. Stay home, smoke weed, listen to The Chives.

Post Trash

A debut album that is disjointed, lo-fi, off key, contains nine credited vocalists, noisy, searches for a style, abrasive, doesn’t care about anybody or anything, can’t carry much of a melody and is just plain snotty. With this description you would think The Chives suck but actually this DIY project is quite the opposite. All of those adjectives make this record a great energetic fuzzed up find

The Fire Note

If shambolic rock ‘n’ roll is your thing, here is the album for you. A sublime car crash of The Rolling Stones, The Strokes and the great-lost American band 20TH Century Princess all wrapped in a not so neat parcel, but with melodies galore and not giving a damn attitude. It even has probably the third finest version of ‘Pleasant Valley Sunday’ you are ever likely to hear: For those who care the two better versions are the Carol King Demo version, followed by the Monkees classic, and not that far behind it this gem of a version. Rock ‘n’ roll is supposed to be fun slightly dangerous and sexy and The Chives debut ticks all the boxes; the box being filled full of post-punk speed fuelled frogs.
